George H.W. Bush (dad) was determined to make the United States "a kinder and gentler nation." In his speech he pledged in "a moment rich with promise" to use American strength as "a force for good."
George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the Navy. He was the youngest pilot in the Navy when he received his wings, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II. On one mission over the Pacific as a torpedo bomber pilot he was shot down by Japanese and was rescued from the water by a U. S. submarine. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.
Next George H.W. Bush completed his education at Yale University where he excelled both in sports and in his studied; he was captain of the baseball team and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In January 1945 he married Barbara Pierce. They had six children-- George, Robin (who died as a child), John (known as Jeb), Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy.
Before becoming our 41st president, Bush had a career in the oil industry of West Texas.
On June 12, 2014, Bush fulfilled a long standing promise by skydiving on his 90th birthday. He made the parachute jump from a helicopter near his home at 11:15 a.m. in Kennebunkport, Maine. The jump marked the eighth time the former president had skydived, including jumps on his 80th and 85 birthday as well. He had tweeted about the incident prior to the jump, saying "It's a wonderful day in Maine — in fact, nice enough for a parachute jump.".
George W. Bush
George W. Bush (son) was our 43rd president. The airborne terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the thwarted flight against the White House or Capitol on September 11, 2001 (9-11), in which nearly 3,000 Americans were killed, transformed George W. Bush into a wartime president. The attacks put on hold many of Bush’s hopes and plans, and Bush’s father, George Bush, the 41st president, declared that his son “faced the greatest challenge of any president since Abraham Lincoln.”
