Somebody:
Frida Kahlo was born just outside of Mexico City, Mexico on July 6, 1907. She died at age 47 on July 13, 1954. She had a mom, a dad, and 5 sisters. She was born in what is now the famous “blue house” called “Casa Azul”. In 1958 it was made into a museum and today is one of the most popular museums in Mexico City. It has some of her personal items and most popular paintings. Frida was very close with her dad.

Wanted:
When Frida was young she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up. She was smart and curious and loved school. She had been studying to become a doctor. Because of an accident, she couldn’t go back to school or attend her classes. Because she was bored of lying in bed, she wanted to borrow her dad’s paints.

But:
When Frida was 18 years old she took the bus home from school. But this ride changed her life forever! There was an accident that ended her dreams of becoming a doctor and continued to cause her pain and illness the rest of her life. This bus collided with a streetcar killing several people. Frida did not die even though a handrail went through her entire body - in one side and out the other - crushing her pelvis and displacing three vertebrae. Because of this, she was stuck in bed for over two years.

So:
So boredom caused her to pick up a paintbrush. She realized that while lying in bed on her back in a full-body cast she needed an easel to hang down. She asked for a mirror so she could see herself and paint herself. Frida eventually became a famous painter. She was known for her self portraits!

Then:
Frida began dating and then married Diego Rivera. He was also a painter and was 20 years older than her. They married on August 21, 1929, divorced once, remarried, and remained married until she died. They lived in several places including the United State. They were both famous. The country referred to them as the ‘Elephant and the Dove’ because he was large and she was petite. She died living in her Casa Azul.

Bonus: Quotes
“I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, and because I am the person I know best.”
