RESEARCH BASED FOLD OUT DISPLAY BOARD
____Step 1: Select A Tribe
Choose a tribe that looks interesting to you.  You may select a specific tribe (Apache or Haida for example) or you may choose a culture group (like Northwest Coastal tribes) that may have several tribes sharing common cultural characteristics.  You may choose any tribe native to North America. You might want to look at the selection of books available from our library, or find books on your own, before you choose.

____ Step 2: Gather Information (Research)
During writing class you will be given time (and guidance) in researching information about your tribe.  Students should select tribes that have a book available - although research may be supplemented with internet resources.  I will provide note cards for you to research in the following categories:
Map
Region and Environment
Artifacts
___ Find a map that shows historic lands of your tribe. You will redraw this map for your display board.
*What region does your tribe come from?
*What does the landscape of that region look like?
*What grows there?  What animals live there?
*What is the climate like?
* What is something your tribe made that is important to your tribe’s culture or survival?
*Think about tools, art, clothing, transportation, items used for religious ceremonies, etc.
*Choose 1 or 2 items to talk about.
Customs and Beliefs
Dwellings
Animals (OPTIONAL)
*What are some of your tribe’s religious customs?
*What ceremonies does your tribe hold?
*How does your tribe entertain themselves?
*What are traditional roles for women? men? children?
* What type of houses or other structures did your tribe build?
*What materials were used in their construction?
*How were they built?  How were other structures used?
*Use this space to describe the dwelling shown as part of  your display board..
* What animals are important to the tribe’s survival?  How were these animals important?

Keep track of the sources you use on your SOURCES card.  Use this card to all record books, websites or other sources of information used for your research.

_____Step 3: Drafting a Written Report
During writing class we will learn to turn those notes into an interesting and detailed report on your tribe!  Time will be given in class to work - so use that time wisely! The first draft will be due: _____________

After you turn in your draft, you’ll receive feedback on your work.  Then, you’ll revise your draft and type a final copy due by: _______________

______Step 4: Creating a SlideShow and Dwelling
Once you have finished your first draft you may start your dwelling model.  We will discuss ideas for materials that you can use for your model. Let me know if there is something I can provide you!
Model Due:____________

In computer lab we will work on our slideshows using Google Slides.  The slides will give you helpful prompts when you present your information to the class.                                 Presentation Due:__________

_______Step 5: Creating a Display Board
Once you get your final draft copied, you’ll create a magnificent display board to show off your work!  We’ll discuss guidelines and materials in class. Display Board Due:__________

_______Step 6: Putting It All Together
The week of January 21st - 24th we will put our work on display and present what we’ve learned with the slide shows about our tribes!
