Character Descriptions
|
Leslie Burke
Leslie is strong, clever, gifted with imagination, and creative. She is also FAST! – claiming the position as the fastest runner in the fifth grade. Her victory in the beginning of the year race (a title usually won by boys) is the first step to upsetting the balance at her new school – Lark Creek Elementary.
Leslie gains the friendship of Jess Aarons and together they learn to survive in a place they don’t truly “fit in’”
|
Jesse Oliver Aarons
Jess, the protagonist of the story, is ten years old and lives in a quiet farming community just outside of Washington D.C. He is the middle child and only boy in a family of 5 children. While the family is not poor, they struggle to make ends meet.
Jesse struggles to fit in either with his family or at school. At home Jess is rarely appreciated for his contributions to the family or for his artistic ability. With Leslie Burke he finally has found someone who gives him the attention he craves.
