____2 points  My academic goal this week is:

____3 points  Language Skills:  The Optimistic Octogenarian
“The old woman walked home in an odd mood considering the meeting she’d just had. She’d always been optimistic, but this kind of optimism, in the face of such a situation bordered on outrageous or even obscene.”

In the dictionary (yes, dictionary skills is a 5th grade standard) look up all the
BOLD ‘O’ words from this passage and write the definitions in your comp journal.  Use 3 in a sentence.

____3 points  Math:  Order of Operations
When solving math equations, there can be only one correct answer.
We need a set of rules in order to avoid this kind of confusion, so
mathematicians devised a standard order of operations for
calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.
Remember:    Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally ?  Well, she’s baaacck!
Here are the written rules:

First perform any calculations inside (parentheses).                                        PLEASE

Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.    MY DEAR

Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.     AUNT SALLY

Example:  4 + 5 +  (7 x 2) = 23
1stStep: (7x2) = 14    2ndStep: no multiplication or division     3rdStep: 4 + 5 + 14 = 23

Write these in your comp journal and SOLVE by following the Order of Operation rules.

#1  (3 x 2) – 5 + 1 + 11 = ___  #2 9 – 7 + (13x2) – 3 = ___ #3  14 + 14 – (14x1) x 2 = ___
